Fighter planes spark security alert false alarm after being ‘spotted escorting plane across UK’
Twitter alarmed by jet sighting
FIGHTER planes were spotted escorting a plane across the UK, sparking a false security alarm on social media.
Jets were seen flanking a mystery aircraft this afternoon leading to speculation they may be tailing a passenger plane through Britain’s airspace.
However, the Ministry of Defence revealed the US based F35 jets were just re-fuelling after taking part in UK air displays.
A spokesman told Sun Online: "There is nothing to be worried about.
"Some F35s have been over here doing displays over the past couple of weeks.
"There were just refuelling before heading back to the US."
Earlier plane spotters reacted with alarm at seeing two jets flanking a bigger aircraft.
Some speculated it may indicate a security breach.
