A MAN was walking along a railway track in the dark when he was hit by a train and left paralysed.
He was lucky to survive the horrific injuries he sustained but is now paralysed.
Police have released the footage of the shocking incident as part of a warning video to show people what can happen if they play or walk on the railways.
The video shows a lot of near misses as people run across the tracks or jump down and then back up again to the platform, but the last piece of footage shows the man who will end up paralysed walking in the dark next to a platform in Birmingham.
In the shocking footage he is seen walking in the same direction as the train - taking a short-cut.
He hears the train coming and tries to lean away from it as it passes by at speed, but he is pulled to the ground and under the train.
Last year British Transport Police recorded 97 incidents when people got onto the railway tracks in Manchester. 66 were on the the track the year before.
Almost 170 young people have died after trespassing onto the tracks in the last ten years.
Chief Inspector Sue Peters, of BTP, said: “The last thing our officers want to do is knock on someone’s door to tell a parent their child has been killed or seriously injured as a result of trespassing.
“We’re doing all we can to keep children safe by patrolling areas where we know they’re likely to trespass and prevent them from doing so. However, we cover thousands of miles of track and we cannot tackle this issue alone.
“That is why we are urging parents and young people to heed this warning and take a reality check when it comes to trespass.
"It’s not a game: they are real tracks, with real trains and real life consequences.
“In addition to patrols, we’ll also be putting signs and posters up at Irlam, Flixton, Patricroft, Lostock, Urmston, Chassen Road and Humphrey Park stations, where trespass is currently an issue, to deter people from endangering their lives by going on the lines.”
Nick Jordan, community safety manager for Network Rail, said: “We are urging parents to remind their children that, if they are on the railway, they are on dangerous ground.
"It may seem like a good idea to take a shortcut, or like fun to play on the tracks, but this is not only illegal, it is also dangerous.
“Britain has the safest railway in Europe but still too many people lose their lives on the tracks. As the railway gets busier and we electrify more lines to improve services, we must work harder to keep young people safe by making them aware of the dangers that exist.
"Taking a short cut or messing around on the tracks can result in serious life-changing injuries or death.”
