The second-year Recreation and Leisure Management student at Cork Institute of Technology and a 21-year-old female American exchange student were fined £44 (2,000 baht) and forced to pray for forgiveness.

Pals of O’Sullivan admitted yesterday they were shocked to learn he was the person at the centre of the sex scandal.

One young man said: “We started to realise it was Ian when we saw the video on Saturday.

“It’s really hard to believe it is him as he is a real upstanding guy.

“His family will be devastated.”

In the video, the American girl in a white bikini kneels in front of Mr O’Sullivan performing a sex act.

The brazen drunk pair are confronted by furious shop keepers as another woman films the act.

A local angrily shouts: “What are you doing here, why you f***ing outside here?”

The slurring Irish lad, wearing khaki shorts and a blue shirt, responds quietly: “I apologise”.

Mr O’Sullivan leads the girl away as the locals threaten to call the cops.

Yesterday they were paraded in front of the media and made to beg for mercy before being allowed to leave.

Thailand is a top summer destination with more than one million Brits flying there every year.

The country, synonymous with beach parties and wild nights, has a zero tolerance on public lewdness.

Tourist websites warn that backpackers caught engaged in a sex act in Thailand could face up to a £700 fine and possible jail time.
