Cheap Aldi plonk beats posh brands to win top award for its liqueur at drinks competition

DISCOUNT supermarket Aldi has beaten some of the world’s swankiest brands to win a gold medal for their liqueur at an international drinks competition.

The German retailer’s ‘Specially Selected Crème de Cassis’, which sells for £7.99, was awarded the top gong at the International Wine and Spirits Challenge.

They beat off stiff competition from posh brands charging twice as much for a bottle including ‘Double Crème de Cassis from Joseph Cartron’.

Aldi won awards for 16 bottles at the blind tasting test with its whiskies also highly commended by judges.

Their 'Glen Marnoch Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky' and 'Glen Marnoch Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky', which both cost £17.99, received silver outstanding awards.

They claimed the accolades ahead of swanky tipple Ardbeg Uigeadail, which sells in shops for £53.95.

Bottles as cheap as £5.99 were also awarded gongs by the panel of experts with Aldi's 'Austin’s Summer Punch' awarded a bronze medal.

Their 'Specially Selected Chocolate Irish Cream Liqueur' and Specially Selected Triple Sec, both £6.99, were given silver awards.

The cheap retailer has now received over 90 international awards for its beers, wines, spirits and liqueurs in 2016 alone.
