Serial killer Levi Bellfield ‘extremely worried’ about his DNA being on shoelace that is key to Russell murder case
LEVI Bellfield has said he is “extremely worried” about his DNA being on a shoelace which is key to the Lin and Megan Russell murder case.
The serial killer told friends he fears the lace could see him nailed for the horrific 1996 killings.
It comes after we revealed how Bellfield, 53 — in jail for killing schoolgirl Milly Dowler and two women — had admitted being near the scene where Lin, 45, and Megan, six, were murdered in Chillenden, Kent.
A source said: “Bellfield is really worried about this, it is strongly playing on his mind.
“He is talking about it a lot and saying they could now have him for this crime. He has been getting calls in prison from his solicitor about it and having urgent conversations with them.
“But he is also suggesting his DNA could be placed on the lace to fit him up, because he at one point sent off samples of his DNA when he was linked to the crime.
“A lot of people think he carried this out but, although he talks about it, he has never confessed.
“He is too clever for that — or at least he thinks he is.”
The 99cm black bootlace was found recently by police after being lost for 14 years.
It had been dropped at the scene by the killer, who had used it to tie up one of Lin’s daughters. It is now being tested using new DNA techniques.
The results could prove whether ex-heroin addict Michael Stone, 60 — serving life for the 1996 murders — is guilty or innocent.
