‘LAUGHING’ binmen trapped elderly residents in their homes after they left wheelie bins strewn across a street - an appalled pensioner has claimed.

The refuse collectors are accused of carelessly hurling bins to the ground during their rounds in Wythenshawe, Manchester on Monday.

Grandmother-of-three Johanne Roach took pictures showing dozens of bins knocked over on the pavement and left lying in front of her neighbours' cars.

She said one elderly resident could not leave the house as she was too frail to move the bins and scared of the repercussions if she did.

Supermarket worker Johanne, 45, said: "They came along to collect the bins at about 2pm and they were just throwing them on the floor without a care in the world.

"One or two of us saw what was happening and went out to ask what the hell was going on. They were just throwing them around willy-nilly and didn't seem to care who saw.

"When we confronted them they just laughed in our faces. Their attitude was shocking. They didn't care what they were doing.

"They were literally just flinging them in front of people's driveways, meaning some cars were blocked in.

"We have a lot of elderly residents who use mobility scooters and the footpaths were totally blocked for them.

"One lady was stuck in for a couple of hours.

"I don't understand why they couldn't have just set the bins to one side like normal people. They were behaving like ar**holes."

Johanne said a different group of workers, believed to be contractors, came along later in the afternoon to remove the bins that had been dumped.

Another Ardenfield Drive resident, mum-of-four Dawn Ming, said she lodged a formal complaint after a verbal confrontation with one of the binmen.

Dawn, 45, said: "It was completely ridiculous. They are supposed to be public servants coming here and keeping our communities tidy, not wrecking them.

"We pay our taxes to pay for them so I was stunned when they just laughed it off. I was asking why couldn't they just leave them upright.

"All the way down our road was just bins scattered everywhere. The ought to be ashamed."

Yvonne Leonard, 63, who uses a mobility scooter to get around, said: "Their behaviour was disgusting. It's a disgrace the mess they've left behind."

Manchester City Council, the authority in charge of refuse collections and recycling in the area, said it had spoken to the workers involved.

The executive member for neighbourhoods, Councillor Nigel Murphy, said: "We have investigated this unacceptable incident and the staff responsible have been reminded of their duty to show proper consideration for residents in the course of their work.

"We will always take prompt action if any worker representing the council fails to meet the high standards of customer service expected of them."
