He's Toast

Thug who kidnapped woman and raped her repeatedly dies in house fire caused by his plastic TOASTER

Twisted sex attacker had accidentally switched the hob on instead of the oven before he died in a blazing inferno

A RAPIST and kidnapper suffered a heart attack and died after being trapped inside his burning house - which went up in flames after his  plastic TOASTER set on fire.

Twisted sex attacker David Wardenier, 60, made the fatal error of turning on the hob instead of the oven on the night of his death.

Firefighters did their best to save the rapist from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, but he suffered a cardiac arrest as his home filled with smoke on January 23.

The fire was accidentally caused by a plastic toaster which was left on top of the switched on hob, an inquest heard yesterday.

Wardenier had already suffered a heart attack in 1996 before the one that killed him in the house fire, the coroner was told.

The demented thug's dark past wasn't known by his neighbours, who only found out after his horrific death.

Wardenier had previously been jailed for 15 years for kidnapping a woman and subjecting her to a terrifying nine-hour ordeal in December 2004.

He forced his 32-year-old victim into the boot of his car before ordering her to strip naked before raping her repeatedly.

The evil sex attacker then plied her with a mixture of anti-depressants, pain killers, and sleeping tablets, before stabbing her 11 times with a kitchen knife.

Wardenier left his victim for dead with a punctured lung and a fractured rib, but was arrested when officers found him staggering home covered in blood.

He admitted kidnap, attempted murder, and two charges of rape and was jailed at Nottingham Crown Court in April 2005.

Sentencing Wardenier, Judge Jonathan Teare branded him a "very dangerous man".

Anthony Curzon, assistant coroner for Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire, concluded Mr Wardenier's death this year was accidental, but had been contributed to by natural causes.

He said: "It is quite possible had he not suffered the cardiac distress he had in the past, Mr Wardenier may well have made his way out of the premises."

Fire officer Leigh Richards said: "The fire was accidental, caused by Mr Wardenier inadvertently turning on his hob after mistakenly confusing it with the temperature control for the oven.

"Every keyhole, vent and window in the property was sealed with DIY PVC, what you would expect to find used for domestic double glazing.

"This affected the smoke exiting the property during the fire.

"The property was predominantly filled with smoke which was down to the ground on entry.

"There was smoke detection equipment in the property. It was believed to be working, but I was unable to test it due to the damage."

Pathologist Dr Hiam Ali gave the cause of death as ischemic heart disease and coronary artery atheroma.

She said: "Mr Wardenier suffered a cardiac episode and was not able to seek help immediately after the fire."

Detective Sergeant Pete Miles, who investigated the Wardenier's crimes in 2004  said the attack was one of the most violent he had seen his 23 year career.

Wardenier - who was put on the Sex Offenders' Register for life - was re-housed after being released from prison and had been living in Stoke for around six months.

Speaking at the time of Wardenier's death, local resident and gran-of-seven Janet Thompson, 66, said: "We were never told a rapist was living on our street.

"It just goes to show that you never know who could be living on your street.

"My kitchen window was opposite his and thinking now about him peering through gives me shivers.

"He would always be out at night, carrying a rucksack and a notepad."
