The prosecution claim that Williams plotted with Walsh to murder Mrs Hartley, 60, because she wanted to re-kindle an affair with Mrs Hartley's partner Ian Johnston,57.

And on her third day in the witness box at Preston Crown Court Williams clashed with Walsh's barrister Tony Cross QC.

Mr Cross asked her: “You thought you had planned the perfect murder, hadn't you?”

Williams replied: “I have not planned any murder - perfect or otherwise.”

Mr Cross: “That is why you were so confident when the police came calling to arrest you.”

She replied: “I was not confident when I was arrested. I was absolutely terrified.”

Mr Cross said she has boasted of her skill at selling holidays and “thought she could con the police and the jury” into believing she was innocent.

Williams told him: “There is a world of difference between selling holiday products and trying to con the police and the jury.

“They are not one and the same thing.”

She was questioned about the purchase of a pair of £19.99 size ten boots two days before the murder which the prosecution claim she wore as a disguise.

Williams claims that she bought the boots as a present for Ian Johnston and had left them at Katrina Walsh's home.

Mr Cross said: “That is a bare-faced lie. Those boots were on your feet when you were slaughtering the victim.”

She replied: “I have never worn those boots on my feet or slaughtered the victim.”

Mr Cross told her she would never accept the prosecution case unless “they had a picture of you with the knife in your hand.”

He said: “Because the police do not have CCTV footage of you stabbing this poor lady to death, you do not accept responsibility.”

Williams replied: “They could not possibly have that because I did not do it.”

Mr Cross urged her to “think of the family and tell the truth.”

She replied: “I am telling the truth. I did not kill Sadie Hartley. I am telling the truth.”

Williams was quizzed about the purchase of the 8ins bladed kitchen knife which police believe was the murder weapon and which was bought by Katrina Walsh for £6 from a Tesco store using her Clubcard.

Mr Cross asked: “If you were going to buy a knife to murder someone, would you buy it using your Tesco clubcard?”

Williams said: “I would never buy a knife to kill anyone.”

Mr Cross said: “You were using Kitt Walsh to do your dirty work for you. You had her wrapped around your little finger.”

Williams replied: “No you are wrong full stop.”

Williams and Walsh both of Chester , deny murder.

The trial continues.
