A MAN thrown out of a quiet country pub after someone stole his seat barged back in with a sawn-off shotgun, locals claim.

The middle aged pub goer was turfed out of the Golden Lion but returned with the weapon which went off in the bar.

Locals in the quiet village of Wrington, Somerset, said people tried to wrestle the gun from his hands but it fired into the floor, spraying shotgun pellets across the pub.

The gun-wielding man was reportedly hit in the hand and terrified residents said there was "blood everywhere" after the man fled and attempted to get into his car.

He was then said to have been attacked with a HAMMER, while shocked onlookers stopped others from joining the fight.

An armed response unit is said to have attended and the man - who was reportedly left slumped half-in-half-out his car - was taken to hospital for treatment.

Another man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

Sophie Cooper, 20, was drinking in the pub next door and heard what happened from someone who restrained the man with the gun.

The carer and service manager said: "A guy got punched, left the pub and got his shot gun which was sawn-off at the end.

"The reason the fight started was because a guy stole his seat.

"He hated the guy and threw some punches and was kicked out by landlord.

"And then came back with his gun, shot the floor, the bullet rebounded and hit his thumb.

"Luckily he only caused harm to himself.

"He ran to his car and another man followed him and pulled him out of the car and beat him.

"Another man followed and used a hammer as a weapon and was bashing him with the hammer.

"Police were called and there were armed police in unmarked cars and an ambulance."

She said the man was local to the area and was in his 50s or 60s.

Sophie added: "There was blood everywhere and a hole in the floor.

"Someone tried to disarm him causing him to shoot himself.

"I don't think he said he was going to fire. He came into the pub, aimed at the floor and then was 'disarmed'.

"Only he was hurt and was later beaten and was taken to hospital because of his injuries."

Another resident who lives opposite the pub said she only saw the aftermath, when seven police cars arrived in the sleepy village.

Lydia Hogg, 18, said: "We spoke to a lady who came out of the pub and she was very shaken up, saying the guy shot at the floor but the bullets sprayed.”

Last night the street remained cordoned off with police tape, and officers were still on the scene.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said: "We were called to a disturbance at a public house in Broad Street, Wrington shortly before 8pm.

"A firearm was discharged - no-one was injured.

"Following the incident a man was assaulted - he has been taken to hospital with minor injuries.

"Another man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

"The area has been cordoned off to allow crime scene investigators to examine the scene.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident. They should call 101, quoting log 1024 of 7 August."

A spokeswoman for South Western Ambulance Service said paramedics attended the pub at about 8pm and took a man to Southmead Hospital.

She said: "His injuries are thought to be the result of an assault.

"There is nothing to suggest they are in a life-threatening condition."
