But, the UK will miss out promised record breaking temperatures that were set to make Britain hotter than Mexico City, because a Spanish plume of hot air has blown off course.

While the plume has turned out to be a damp squid those who flocked to the seaside shouldn't be too upset.

Meteorologist Alex Burkill said:  "It will still be above average for the time of year. It will definitely feel like summer, perhaps just not as hot as we thought it would be."

A new band of air from the south east, rather than the south, will bring slightly milder conditions and less humid air.

It appears that at the end of this week July's record temperature of 33.5C will still be the hottest of the year.

St John Ambulance has warned people not to be complacent about the British summer and to stay in the shade, keep hydrated and wear sun cream.

Training officer Clive James said: "The classic signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke are dizziness and headache - if you're suffering from either, find somewhere cool and drink plenty of fluids. If your symptoms don't get any better and you're concerned, seek medical attention."

Despite high temperatures during the day It is likely to be chilly overnight with temperatures falling as low as 3C or 4C in parts of Scotland.

The good weather is not expected to last long with unsettled conditions forecast for Thursday.
