GREEN MACHINE

Futuristic traffic light tech will ensure you NEVER wait at a red signal again

Innovative system designed to allow drivers to skip queues and get back on the open road

Racing for a green traffic light before it turns red could soon be a thing of the past for millions of motorists.

New technology will enable traffic lights to be able to 'talk' to cars to tell drivers exactly how long they have before a light switches colour.

When approaching a junction an internet-enabled car will request information from a computer which controls traffic lights in the local area. The computer can tell the driver when the traffic lights are due to change via a countdown on the dashboard.

The innovation will be available to owners of Audi cars later this autumn, on models built from June onwards. It will introduced in the US first before rolling out to other countries, including the UK.

Drivers will need a subscription to Audi's Connect Prime, which links their car to the internet and costs £300 a year.

Other car manufacturers are believed to working on similar technology.

The technology is the first step in "vehicle to infrastructure" communication. In years to come, vehicles will send information to computers which will use the date to improvetraffic flow and ease congestion.

The technology will soon be tested on the UK's first "connected corridor". The £15 million stretch of road between London and Dover will have wi-fi hubs to beam trafficinformation directly into cars.

The Highways Agency will also test sensors to help target road works by producing information about the condition of tunnels, bridges and roads.
