After Bake Off controversy Jaffa Cake maker McVitie’s confirms snacks are NOT for dunking

The inventors of the Jaffa Cake have ruled the biscuit should not be dunked in tea as it has a sponge base

JAFFA Cakes maker McVitie’s yesterday said they should not be dunked in tea after Paul Hollywood sparked outrage by doing so on The Great British Bake Off.

Paul, 50, had viewers in uproar on Wednesday night and fellow judge Mary Berry, 81, told the Merseysider: “We don’t do that in the South.”

Now McVitie’s has said the sponge base is as strong as Digestives or Rich Tea for dunking.

Its research revealed 72 per cent of us have never dunked a Jaffa Cake.

But Paul may have inspired millions as 50 per cent say they will now try it.

Kerry Owens, Brand Director at McVitie's said "Only British people could be so passionate about this issue.

"And the people have spoken. Jaffa Cakes are not for dunking.

"As the experts of all things Jaffa Cake, we tend to agree – the sponge base just isn't robust enough to hold up in a hot drink.

"We think our Jaffa Cakes are fantastic as they are, so why mess with the best?"
