Google Doodle marks The Neverending Story’s 37th anniversary in tribute to Michael Ende’s 1979 children’s classic

THE latest Google Doodle is an enchanting depiction of fantasy children's novel The Neverending Story and marks the 37th anniversary of Michael Ende's book.

Many will remember the story from the 1984 film adaption which came out just five years after the novel was published.

Despite being a family favourite the book's author slammed the production as a "revolting movie... a gigantic melodrama of kitsch, commerce, plush and plastic".

He later demanded his name was removed from the credits and said the makers "just wanted to make money".

Despite that another two films were released in 1990 and 1994.

Google has doodled scenes from the much-loved book, starting off with the main character Bastian Balthazar Bux reading

The Neverending Story in the loft of his school.

Another illustration depicts the moment boy warrior Atreyu rides on the back of the "luckdragon" Falkor over the mystical landscape of Fantastica.

The novel is a book-within-a-book and the story changes in response to Bastian's thoughts and emotional reactions.

The youngster, who found the book in an antique store after escaping bullies, eventually enters the story himself.

Fans of the 80s film will likely still have its pounding synthpop theme song stuck in their heads.

The track was composed by Italian electronic disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder, who is widely regarded as being one of the most important record producers of all time.

Moroder produced Donna Summer's groundbreaking single "I Feel Love".

His track for The Neverending Story was performed by Kajagoogoo lead singer Limahl.

Speaking about their decision to celebrate the novel by illustrating scenes from the Ende's novel, Google said: "Every once in a blue moon captures the imagination, providing a portal into magical places unknown.

"So it was The Neverending Story."
