Shawn Sturgeon, 38, ‘kills wife Charlotte, 29, by running her over at Salt Lake City airport after trip with kid in car’

A MAN has been accused of killing his wife by running her over at Salt Lake City international airport just after the couple returned from vacation with their young child.

Shawn Christopher Sturgeon, 38, was arrested after he allegedly hit and killed his wife Charlotte Sturgeon, 29, with the couple's SUV at the airport's parking lot on Monday.

The Salt Lake City police told that the accident occurred on the second floor of the airport parking garage around 2:40pm.

Surveillance footage from the garage shows Shawn putting a young child in the backseat before getting into the driver's seat.

Footage then shows the brake lights of the SUV coming on as Shawn drives forward, running over his wife. He drives about ten feet before stopping to put her in the car.

"The victim appears to be standing in the open rear passenger door and (her husband) begins to reverse the vehicle. The victim's legs can be seen flailing about as he continues to reverse, being dragged which causes her to fall to the ground under the vehicle," reads an affidavit from Utah detectives, according to .

"The arriving officers stated that (Shawn) appeared to be under the influence of alcohol as evidenced by the odor coming from his mouth and glassy bloodshot eyes," the affidavit continues.

Salt Lake City Police Department officers say that Shawn "made several spontaneous utterances that he 'ran my wife over,' 'killed my wife' and 'I accidentally ran her over,'" as KSL reports.

After allegedly hitting his wife, Shawn drove himself and his wife to the airport garage payment booth to ask for help with his critically injured wife.

“Shortly after the crash, Sturgeon drove the vehicle, with his wife critically injured inside, to the airport parking payment booths where he asked for help,” Salt Lake City police . “This incident occurred shortly after the couple returned to SLC from a vacation.”

Police haven't released a possible motive for the accident, and they haven't clarified if they believe Shawn hit his wife on purpose.

Paramedics were called to the garage and transferred Charlotte to the nearest hospital, where she later died.

"ICYMI: Police say a husband and wife had just returned from vacation when things turned deadly," of 2KUTV news.

Shawn has been arrested under the suspicion of automobile homicide and criminal negligence DUI of alcohol/drugs and is currently in police custody.

He is being held at the Salt Lake County Metro Jail and is not illegible for bond at the time being.

reports that it is unclear if Shawn has yet to hire an attorney to speak on his behalf.

“No further information on this case is being released,” Salt Lake City police told USA News Today.

writes that under Utah law, "a person can be arrested for investigation of automobile homicide if the driver operates a motor vehicle in a negligent manner causing the death of another and has a blood-alcohol content above the legal limit of 0.05%."

The couple lived together in Taylorsville, Utah according to their most recent address.

There were no impacts to airport operations or airline travel due to the accident.
