Turkish Police said the man shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) before being shot in the leg by police.

A spokesperson for Israel's Foreign Ministry says the attacker was apparently armed with a knife.

Emmanuel Nahshon told AP it was "an attempted assault near the Israeli embassy in Ankara. The attacker was wounded before he reached the embassy."

An Israeli official says the knifeman was wounded as he tried to storm the building.

He has since been captured.

Ankara's Governor's office says the suspect appears to be mentally unstable with no links to any organisation.

Nashon said the Israeli Embassy and its staff are safe.

Early reports claimed the man was shot dead and was with an accomplice, but these have since been denied.

A suspicious package close to the embassy is now being examined by a bomb squad.

Several embassies were closed in Ankara last week amid fears of a militant attack.

Turkey has been caught up in a series of deadly attacks over the past year by ISIS and Kurdish militant groups.
