MSNBC's Malcolm Nance has left the network to fight in Ukraine's war against Russia.
The former naval intelligence officer, 61, appeared on Joy Reid’s program The Reid Out on Monday night wearing full combat gear and carrying a firearm.
The Ukrainian and American flags could be seen on his body armor.
Nance spent time in Ukraine before Russia launched the invasion and said he had friends fearing for their survival.
Speaking from a secure location, Nance told : “The more I saw of the war going on, the more I thought, I’m done talking all right? It’s time to take action here.
“I am here to help this country fight what essentially is a war of extermination.”
Nance, who has joined the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine, said he’s fighting to protect innocent people in light of Russian aggression.
He explained: “It’s not a conventional war.”
He claimed that Russian forces are “mass-murdering civilians”, adding: “there are people here like me who are here to do something about it.”
Nance tweeted that’s “he’s done talking” as he shared a picture of himself holding his assault rifle.
He included the hashtag “Slava Ukraini” which is the country’s national salute and translates as Glory to Ukraine.
Nance doesn’t believe he will be targeted because he’s American.
He said: “The war that is being waged here is being waged against everybody. They are not going around hunting for American flag patches or to see who’s black, who’s Asian, who’s Latino.”
Nance frequently appeared on MSNBC and provided commentary on counterterrorism.
It’s not known when he left the network but there's no reference that he was a contributor in his Twitter biography.
An MSNBC representative told Politico that Nance had left the network.
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that the so-called “battle for the Donbas” region is underway.
Explosions were heard along the entire front as Vladimir Putin launched a major new offensive to seize control of the east.
Ukrainian outlets reported a series of explosions in Kharkiv, Nikolaev, and the suburbs of Donetsk.
And videos on social media appeared to show a blitz on towns as anti-aircraft fire lit up the night sky.
Zelensky said: “We can now confirm that Russian troops have begun the battle for the Donbas, which they have been preparing for a long time.”
Zelensky's chief of staff said the assault on the Donbas marked the start of the "second phase" of the war.
The assault came as fighting increased in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions that make up the Donbas.
President Biden described Russia’s war in Ukraine as genocide as he accused Putin of trying to “wipe out the idea of even being a Ukrainian”.
The president is set to hold a call on Tuesday with allies to coordinate a strategy on how western leaders can hold Putin’s regime accountable.
