The two are not related despite having the same last name.

The sheriff's office in Alabama says investigators are looking into whether the missing inmate and the corrections officer were romantically involved.

As the county's assistant director of corrections, Vicky "was frequently throughout the cell blocks, has contact with all the inmates at one time or another," Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton told .

"But as far as a romantic relationship or something like that, we have no evidence or proof that that was the case, although it's a possibility."

On Friday, Vicky told jail employees to prepare the inmate for transport to the courthouse for a mental health evaluation. However, Singleton revealed no such appointment was scheduled.

She also told co-workers she wasn’t feeling well and planned to get medical attention after dropping him off, but officials said there was no evidence of this appointment either.

The US Marshals Office confirms White was handcuffed and shackled when he and Vicky left the jail Friday morning, but she violated protocol by leaving the facility with White alone.

Officials said no one realized the two were missing until around 3.30pm.

The vehicle that the two left the detention center in was found in the parking lot of a local shopping center, and police found no evidence when searching the car.

'NOBODY SAW THIS COMING'

On Monday, Sheriff Singleton, who previously called Vicky an "exemplary employee" for 16 years, said she “participated” in the escape, but they're unsure if she did it willingly or was forced.

Singleton said Vicky talked about retiring for three or four months and even sold her home about a month ago, speaking about moving to the beach.

The sheriff said that Vicky submitted her retirement papers last week after two decades with the department.

"Everybody thought she was going to retire. Nobody saw this coming,” the sheriff said on Monday.

Singleton said Vicky is definitely in danger, willingly or not.

"This guy's no one to mess with. He's 6-foot-9, weighs somewhere around 250 pounds. ... We're assuming he's armed because she was armed," he said.

MOTHER'S PLEA

Vicky's mother, Pat Davis, is in complete shock over the news and has desperately pleaded for her daughter to come home.

"As a mother, I didn't know how to act because I thought at first it was a mistake. And then when I found out for sure it was, it was just disbelief," Davis told .

"I lie in there at night, and you can't get it off your mind, and then when you wake up, if you do fall asleep, that's the first thing that you think of... You know if you got a kid and she's out there, it's just like she's in danger, and we don't know where she's at."

Davis revealed that Vicky had been living with her for five weeks ever since her daughter sold her house.

The mother says Vicky didn't speak about work often and never brought up retirement or White in a conversation.

"You know, I never heard of him, never seen his picture, nothing. I didn't know anything about him," Davis told the outlet.

"We don't know if she was taken by force or if she was voluntarily in this. But we just want her back, that's all we want."

Davis explained how she doesn't think her daughter would ever help an inmate escape, saying she's probably never "even had a speeding ticket."

"We want her home. We'll go pick her up if she'll just call and tell us to come and get her. We'll go pick her up," she says.

White was serving 75 years for a series of crimes in 2015, including a home invasion, carjacking and a police chase.
