The gizmo became jammed under a seat in premium class, where it is thought to have been left by a previous passenger.

People on the Boeing 767-400 plane became concerned when they smelt a strange odour and noticed smoke coming from the seat.

The flight then landed in Manchester, where it was met by emergency service staff.

: "On September 25 en-route from Detroit to Amsterdam diverted to Manchester due to smoke in the cabin.

"The aircraft landed safely and Delta’s maintenance team quickly found the source and the aircraft was cleared to continue its journey. The flight arrived in Amsterdam at 2.55pm.

"The device in question fell below the seat and became jammed, which caused the malfunction.

"The safety of passengers and crew is Delta’s number one priority."

Earlier this month, Samsung recalled millions of Galaxy Note 7 phones after several of the devices burst into flames whilst charging up.

It is not yet known what model of tablet caused the emergency landing of Flight DL138, but it was definitely not a Note 7 smartphone.

A spokesman for Samsung said: "It appears that external factors contributed to this incident. This is not related to the Galaxy Note7.

"We have reached out to Delta to investigate as the cause is yet to be determined."
