THREE people are hospitalized after multiple train cars overturned and ended up submerged in water following a derailment near a creek.

The derailment happened near Freeport Road near Little Deer Creek in Harmar Township, , on Thursday afternoon.

In total, 17 train cars from the Norfolk Southern company derailed in the horrific incident, according to .

Photos from the scene showed several train cars overturned and submerged into Little Deer Creek, a tributary to the Allegheny River.

Eight of the cars were submerged in the creek, said the Allegheny County Emergency Management Services.

Officials told the outlet a heavy constriction vehicle was crossing the tracks when it was hit by the train.

A waterline for Harmar Township was reportedly broken in the accident.

 A railroad bridge was also crushed in the derailment.

According to the Allegheny County Emergency Management Services, the tankers were carrying sweet crude oil.

The other cars were buffer cars, meaning they were either empty or carrying plastic pellets used as a buffer around cars that have combustible material.

The driver of the constriction vehicle and the two operators of the train were all transported to a local hospital for treatment, Action News 4 reported.

Their condition wasn't immediately known.

Multiple first responders are on scene, including water rescue boats assessing the damage.

Freeport Road is closed in both directions between Hulton Bridge and Guys Run Road due to the crash.

Norfolk Southern issued a statement following the incident:

“Late this afternoon, one of our eastbound trains struck a dump truck carrying stone, which caused a derailment. Thank you to the first responders who assisted our crew members. At this time, our personnel are on-site and working with local authorities to determine next steps.”
