A body found in a trunk of a vehicle in Texas is believed to be that of a missing 19-year-old who vanished with her partner last month in a case shrouded in mystery.

Officials in New Caney, Texas, on Sunday confirmed they had found the decomposing bodies of 19-year old Megan Madison Leach and her unidentified partner, who went missing on 25 May.

Roman Forest Police Department received a call from two men riding 4-wheelers after they had made a gruesome discovery.

One of the men said he had found a long gun as well as human remains on either side of a blue BMW nearby parked near the intersection of Fairway Drive and Putters Green.

When they arrived at the scene in rural Montgomery County, officers discovered a body in the "late stages of decomposition" near the wooded area.

Upon investigating the BMW, homicide detectives found human remains in the truck of the vehicle.

“Preliminary information leads us to believe that the bodies belong to the couple that was reported missing on May 25," Roman Forest Police Chief Stephen Carlisle in a statement.

"The female is thought to be Megan Madison Leach, a 19-year-old female, and the other body which has not yet been positively identified is believed to belong to the registered owner of the vehicle."

The unidentified man is believed to be the owner of the luxury car, which had been parked in the same location for a couple of weeks.

Leach, from Roman Forest, and the unidentified man were believed to be in a relationship when they disappeared.

The sheriff's office last month said Leash "may be a victim of human trafficking" and was likely being transported to Harris County or Louisiana, according to her missing persons poster.

The cause of death remains unknown.

"The motive and circumstances surrounding these deaths are under investigation," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

The bodies have been taken to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for an autopsy and positive identification.

"At this time, we do not believe there is any danger to the public. This is an active investigation and no other details can be provided at this time," Steve Squier, Specialist Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, said in a statement.
