A Jersey Transit train crashed through a barrier at the end of the track about 8.30am yesterday morning.
It has been reported that the train went through ticket barriers and into the reception area of Hoboken station.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie confirmed there had been one fatality.
She has been identified as 34-year-old Hoboken resident Fabiola Bittar de Kroon.
Officials say the Brazilian-born mum was hit by flying debris as the “full speed” train smashed into the busy rail hub.
Another 108 people were injured in the crash.
Hoboken is a city in Hudson County in New Jersey and according to the latest census in 2010, the it has a population of more than 50,000.
Hoboken is part of the New York metropolitan area and is the site of Hoboken Terminal Station which is a major transportation hub for the region.
In 2012 the city was devastated by the storm surge and high winds associated with Hurricane Sandy which left 1,700 homes flooded and caused $100 million in damage.
