Stunned London gardeners discover AK-47 assault rifle in hedge they were trimming

Police scrambled to scene in Southwark shortly after 11.40 am on Thursday

A GROUP of gardeners were left stunned to discover a deadly assault rifle in a bush they were pruning.

The council workers chanced upon the AK-47 in Southwark, London yesterday.

Police scrambled to the scene shortly after 11.40 in the morning and took the weapon away for forensic testing.

The firearm is widely used by the Russian Army and has a firing rate of 650 rounds per minute.

It has since been established that the gun had been decommissioned.

Southwark Police’s Acting Detective Superintendent Nicola Duffy said: “Firearms - whether decommissioned or not - have the potential to cause fear and harm and I am glad this weapon is now off the streets.

"I would urge anyone who has information that could assist police in removing firearms from the community to contact us.”

Southwark CID are investigating and no arrests have been made.
