Human foot in a boot washed up on an island beach was today confirmed as a mother missing for six months

The foot of Avril Whitfield, 57, was discovered three weeks ago by a member of the public.

A HUMAN foot in a boot washed up on an island beach was today confirmed as a mother missing for six months.

Avril Whitfield, 57, has been missing from her home since April 1 despite a massive search.

The foot was discovered three weeks ago by a member of the public walking round Llanddwyn Island on the west coast of Anglesey.

DNA tests confirmed the gruesome find was Avril and broke the news to her family.

Specialist divers, police and scores of members of her community had mounted searches after she went missing from her home in Caernarfon in North Wales.

A family spokesman thanked people for 'all their support and kindness shown to them during the months that Avril was missing'.

He said: "Avril was very well liked and very much loved by all who knew her."

A police spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with Avril Whitfield's family at this very difficult time.

"Her death is not being treated as suspicious."

The coroner for North West Wales, Mr Dewi Pritchard-Jones, has been notified.
