Riverdale Walmart shooting in Georgia sends customers running after ‘shots fired during dispute in meat department’

A SHOOTING at a Walmart sent customers running on Thursday after a dispute in the meat department, cops said.

Shots were fired inside the store in Georgia around 6pm local time, according to Riverdale Police.

An argument in the Walmart store's meat department reportedly led to the shooting.

Two men were involved with one opening fire on the other, according to police.

The injured man was taken to a nearby hospital.

The other man ran off and was not in custody, Riverdale Police said.

Neither have been identified.

An off-duty police officer who had been in the store at the time of the shooting reported it after hearing the gunfire, 11Alive reported.

While there was a large police presence, Riverdale Police said the incident didn't involve an active shooter.

WSBTV reports that police blocked all entrances to the store.

Police were assisting with evacuating customers.

Multiple police agencies were on the scene as the shooting remained under investigation.

In addition to the Riverdale Police Department, Clayton County Police Department, Jonesboro Police Department, South Fulton Police Department, ATF, US Marshals, and the Fayette County Sheriff's Office also responded.

Investigators were reviewing surveillance footage from inside the store to gain a better understanding of the incident.

One eyewitness who was in the store at the time of the incident reported hearing between 10 and 20 shots.

Another witness told 11Alive that there was a stampede to get out of the store when the shots were heard, with many people leaving their items behind.

The Riverdale Walmart is located along Highway 85 in Georgia.
