But smug François Decoster denied that France was at fault.

The vice-president of Hauts-de-France, the region which includes Calais, tried to blame Britain leaving the EU.

He said: “I felt very sorry for British families stuck in such a miserable situation.

"I heard Brexit would have no cost, but apparently it does have a cost. The best solution was the one we had before, with no controls.”

But former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt hit back, saying: “The bigger issue is there is a lack of willingness in the French government to be co-operative with Britain in any way because they are furious about Brexit.

“They think we have mucked up their long-term plan for a united Europe.”

The AA warned nightmare queues seen over the weekend at Dover and Folkestone are likely to be repeated.

Spokesman Jack Cousens said: “The chaos is just on pause. Every weekend for the foreseeable future we could see a repeat.

“This is partly because it is taking longer to check passports and French border control have failed to provide enough staff.

“It’s also because more people than ever are choosing to go abroad this summer.

"Lots have been seeing delays at airports and thinking, ‘Maybe it’s better if we just drive’.”
