The news comes after dozens of people around the UK reported a series of sightings of people dressed as clowns frightening children -  and adults.

One of the most dramatic happened on Friday morning when a masked man carrying a knife jumped out in front of kids and followed them to school in County Durham.

The pupils were left distressed but unhurt by the clown, who was wearing grey tracksuit bottoms, red shoes and a multicoloured top.

Amazon have a multitude of x-rated clown outfits up for grabs - ranging from masks to full head-to-toe costumes.

One big seller is a fanged clown mask which is being paired with the machete by buyers.

Aaron Raine wrote: "I wear this mask all the time on Halloween, and my god you scare even the adults. It looked miles scarier when you see it in person.

"A tip is to stay in the shadows as the white face appears to look 100% miles scarier!!!"

Allan Day added:" It scared the crap out of my children and my wife hates it which to me is always a bonus."

Another popular seller is a 'Killer Clown Make Up Kit' which sells from £4.90 and comes with fangs and fake blood.

Police forces in Britain have been forced to issue warnings of 'killer clowns' after the epidemic spread to the UK from the States.

Sightings have taken place in Liverpool, as well as in Caernarfon, north Wales, where a schoolboy filmed a clown lurking by a playground late at night.

Clown sightings have also been reported near to schools in Ayr, Scotland, where there were rumours a 'killer clown' was on the loose.

Supt David Duncan of Police Scotland said the force had received “a few sporadic reports of individuals dressed as clowns in some areas”.

He reiterated that many incidents reported on social media had been confirmed as hoaxes and emanate from overseas.

In Clacton, Essex, two schoolgirls were approached by a pair of clowns who asked if they wanted to go to a birthday party.

The incident, which happened in Oxford Road at about 9am on Tuesday, prompted Clacton county high school to ban pupils from leaving the premises at lunchtime.

Acting Ch Insp Darren Deex of Essex constabulary said the force was aware of a number of reports from concerned residents across the county “relating to people dressed as clowns, specifically near to schools during opening times”.

There have been a number of arrests in America after reports of clowns trying to lure kids into woods as well as running around with knives and guns.

The clown trend has also spread to Australia, where police warned about people “parading in the public wearing clown masks”.

When contacted by the Sun online a spokesman for Amazon said the company would not comment on the sales of its clown products.
