950 years since the 1066 Battle of Hastings, here’s where to celebrate at a re-enactment this weekend

TO CELEBRATE 950 years since mainland Britain was last invaded by a foreign power a number of events are taking place across the whole country.

The Battle of Hastings saw the Normans sweep to victory over the old Anglo Saxons and here is how you can join in with the celebrations.

Where can I get involved in the celebrations?

On Saturday and Sunday families can travel to Hastings itself in order to re-live the atmosphere of the battle at the 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield centre.

More than 1,066 Norman and Saxon soldiers will clash in this special re-enactment event.

Step foot in the encampments, see the displays, meet the falconers, and the cavalry.

You can also have a go at archery and have fun in a kids battle, meet the authors, visit the medieval traders and perhaps try a pint of mead.

Witness the action on the date that changed history and immerse yourself in medieval life.

The life and times of the 11th century Norman Period will be demonstrated at on Wednesday, October 26 and Thursday, October 27.

With combat, weapons, armour and crafts displays, visitors will be able to see what life was like for those living in a castle following the Battle of Hastings, and the building of the first phase of the castle.

A special Bayeux Tapestry tour is taking place at Reading Museum on Friday 14 October.

The museum in Belgrave Street has a full size copy of the Bayeux Tapestry, a long piece of cloth which was first recorded in 1476 depicts the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings.

, including sculpture and metalwork influenced by the characters of the medieval world. With a chance to handle real and replica objects from the collection.

If you are after something a bit more different, as part of the anniversary year, Hastings Borough Council commissioned new art works and performances from national and international artists as part of the ROOT 1066 International Festival.

The story unravels the mysteries, rivalries and bitter conflicts that led to a final battle that would change our history forever.
