That means logging onto the world’s biggest social networking site at your work desk might not necessarily land you in hot water with the boss.

Workplace, by Facebook (formerly known as Facebook at Work) launched today and is available to any organisation that wants to use it.

Facebook says it “makes it easier to get things done, all while using familiar Facebook features like News Feed, Groups, Chat, Live Video and more, and is mobile-first, so employees can use it to work with their colleagues from anywhere in the world”.

The app looks similar to Facebook but is kept completely separate from users' personal profiles.

It is designed to replace other business tools such as email, with more than 1,000 firms already said to be using it.

The company added: “People spend a majority of their daily life working, and today’s workplaces are complex.

“We’ve all been in situations where we’re drowning in emails, can’t find the teammates we need and miss important updates.

“Workplace can help solve this, providing employees more access to the right information, better alignment with teams.

“A strong organisation is one where news travels quickly.

“No training required since it’s based on familiar Facebook features like News Feed, Groups and Messages.”
