THIS is the terrifying moment a spooky "killer clown" charged at a family after blocking their car in the dead of the night.

The haunting footage, filmed on the family's dash cam, shows the masked prankster emerging from a motorway underpass and standing in the middle of the road, waving creepily at the halted car.

When the lurid figure starts walking towards the vehicle, the scared male driver tries to reverse away.

But then the crazed clown makes a sudden dash towards the family, who were returning home from a pub dinner.

After backing up far enough the "panicked" driver puts his foot down and speeds towards the joker, who jumps out of the road a split second before being mowed down by the car.

In a Facebook post, the wife of the driver wrote: "We were just coming back from a family evening at The Drawbridge pub, just as we got to Grange Mill Lane we were confronted by this person coming out from the under path tunnel and charging at us.

"My husband in panic drove straight towards it and luckily it jumped out of the way.

"We will pass this over to the Police. Keep safe!"

The spooky video, filmed in Sheffield, is the latest spotting of a "killer clown" in a craze that has swept the UK in the run up to Halloween.

Police have warned pranksters jumping on the trend, which started in America, that they could be arrested for dressing up as clowns.

Some Facebook users commenting on the Sheffield video showed little patience with the actions of the masked.

Lew Brealey wrote on the Sheffield Clown Sighting Facebook page: "Next time don't stop and knock the f***** over. Simples, shouldn't be clowning about should they."

One keyboard joker believed she might have an idea who the culprit was.

Kelly Drewett said: "It's probably my ex seen as he acted as a clown."

But others were less convinced the high-quality video was a genuine real-life horror film.

Dan Swfc Wells said "the people videoing probably planned it", while Debs Groves-Taylor thought the footage looked "definitely fake".

In South Wales Police attended numerous reports as police are reporting more and more sightings and in Leicestershire, one woman was scared so badly she went into early labour as the craze continues to baffle much of the UK.

Drivers in Manchester were startled to see two clowns running at their cars on Sunday, and a mum-of-two was left with terrified children after one jumped on her car.
