A Met spokesman said: "On Tuesday October 11 police were called shortly before 3.45pm to reports of a man seen in a car with a suspected firearm wearing a mask in the Church Green area of Hayes.

"Armed officers from Heathrow's Aviation Policing unit stopped the car on Uxbridge Road, Hillingdon, and an imitation firearm was recovered.

"The driver was arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm and taken into custody at a west London police station."

Witnesses told the  that the man was wearing a clown mask and that a similar mask was recovered from his car.

It comes after dozens of reports across the UK of pranksters dressing up as clowns to scare members of the public.

South Yorkshire Police are also investigating claims that a clown with a baseball bat, travelling around the Wickersley area of Rotherham in a car with clown music blaring out, chased a group of children on Wednesday evening.

It has also been claimed that a clown chased a group of young children on a nearby street on the same night and that a pregnant woman and a toddler were recently chased by a clown in the area.
