GRIM RITUAL

Sick moment Yorkshire Ripper’s pal scatters monster’s ashes in the sea off Lanzarote in twisted ceremony

THE Yorkshire Ripper’s ashes have been scattered in the sea off Lanzarote in a sick ceremony to fulfil one of the serial killer’s dying wishes.

A friend travelled to the Canary Island with an urn containing some of the monster’s remains and sprinkled them into the Atlantic Ocean.

She carried out the grim ritual from a rocky cove close to beach Playa de los Pocillos on the south of the Spanish island, an area popular with British tourists.

Ripper Peter Sutcliffe, who died with Covid aged 74 in November 2020, had asked the woman in his final months to scatter his remains “somewhere nice and sunny”.

And the friend, a regular jail visitor of Sutcliffe who kept a jar of his ashes on her mantelpiece, this week flew to Lanzarote on holiday and fulfilled his request.

Sutcliffe, who killed 13 women and attempted to murder seven more, had barely travelled abroad before he was arrested in January 1981 after the biggest manhunt in British police history.

But the former lorry driver asked his friend to pick a spot where his remains would be in a “better and happier place”.

The woman, who asked not to be identified, said: “I made a promise to Peter to scatter his ashes somewhere nice and sunny while I was on my travels.

“I know people will think it is appalling, but as far as I’m concerned I was carrying out the wishes of a dying old man.

“He wanted to be in a better and happier place.

“It was a nice moment and, at the end, I was engulfed by a wave which I felt like was Peter acknowledging it.”

But retired roofer Neil Jackson, 64, whose mother Emily, 42, was Sutcliffe’s second murder victim in 1976, blasted: “It is shocking and disgusting that someone would want to carry out that monster’s dying wishes.

“His remains should have been chucked down a drain or sent to the local council tip.”
