Your old iPhone is about to become obsolete and potentially worthless as the tech giant gets set to stop its support

Apple 'to end servicing, software updates and spare parts' for the iPhone 4

APPLE is reportedly preparing to add your trusty old iPhone 4 to its “obsolete list” – making it potentially worthless.

This would mean the tech giant stops providing support for the device – including servicing, software updates and spare parts.

Apple brands products obsolete five years after it stops producing them.

The company says on its website: “Owners of iPhone, iPad, iPod, or Mac products may obtain service and parts from Apple or Apple service providers for 5 years after the product is no longer manufactured—or longer where required by law.

“Apple has discontinued support for certain technologically obsolete and vintage products.”

That list already includes the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4 CDMA – and it is being widely reported that Apple plans to add the iPhone4 (which cannot be updated beyond iOS 7.1.2).

The 13-inch Macbook Air model that was released in 2010 is also said to be about to hit the obsolete list – with 31 October touted as the deadline date, according to Japanese site Macotakara.

The latest news comes ahead of speculation that the company plans to hold an event later this month to reveal updated versions of its Macbook range – and new iPads as well.

Apple has shown in the past how ruthless it is willing to be with some of its older technologies and models.

The smartphone manufacturer was slammed by angry customers after its recent decision to ditch its headphone jacks in the iPhone 7.

And password technology could soon be heading towards the obsolete list as well, with reports claiming the iPhone 8 will be fitted with eyeball-scanning security technology.
