It appeared at dusk with a smokey tail of fire and dust following behind it.

The object appears to be a meteor from outer space, but it has not yet been formally identified.

Mark James, who captured the footage, "It was about 6.40pm and I was on top of the hill leading up to Penarth town.

"I thought it was a flare from the RNLI."

The mysterious sighting coincides with the start of the Orionids Meteor Shower.

The astronomical phenomenon gets its name from the Orion, a constellation which lies in the sky above the equator.

The meteors, associated with Halley’s Comet, occur every year in October.

When the conditions of the night are right, dozens of shooting stars can be seen falling from the sky.

The Orionid shower can best be seen between midnight and just before dusk between October 20 and October 22.
