Four Typhoon jets flew from the RAF Lossiemouth base to hunt down the Mexican aircraft carrying hundreds of passengers near Glasgow after officials lost contact.
The Volaris XA-VLX flight had been travelling from France to Iceland when it stopped communicating with air traffic controllers on the ground.
The jet an Airbus A8320, flying from a low-cost airline based in Santa Fe, was escorted to safety by the military through the skies before landing safely at just before 4pm.
Police shut roads around the airport as the jet headed towards Prestwick Airport.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "An aircraft has been diverted to Glasgow Prestwick Airport, Ayrshire around 2.40pm today following reports of a temporary loss of communication.
"A full emergency response has been put into action at the airport.
"The aircraft landed safely at 3.57pm.
"Emergency services are in attendance to establish the full circumstances."
Roads around the airport have now re-opened.
