DEATH THROES

Inside creepy abandoned morgue littered with bloody sheets which has been left to rot after massive earthquake

SPOOKY images of bloodied sheets and creepy medical equipment from an Italian morgue that was abandoned after an earthquake have been unearthed.

An urban explorer photographed the eerie site, which has been abandoned since the L'Aquila earthquake devastated parts of central Italy 13 years ago.

The remains of San Salvatore Morgue were captured by Video journalist, Lost Ireland, whose shocking photos revealed a hair-raising past.

Images showed a pile of blood-soaked sheets, human remains, rusted out examination beds and discarded forensic utensils.

Lost Ireland has explored abandoned sites for five years, but the amateur photographer said the Italian morgue had a chilling atmosphere.

He said: "It was definitely eerie, the morgue had a funny smell in it and it was pitch black so we had to use torches.

"You start to think you can hear all sorts of weird noises in that kind of environment so you definitely get jumpy.

"This, however, was the only one I've ever seen so much biological waste left behind including bones, blood and fluid samples."

The morgue, outside Rome, Italy, was destroyed by the 6.3 magnitude earthquake in 2009.

The earthquake killed more than 300 people and left around 65,000 people homeless in the region of Abruzzo.

Lost Ireland said he hoped his images captured a part of lost history.

He said: "I would argue that my photos are a form of capturing history as they'll still be around after the buildings aren't.

"Most people like the photos and consider them interesting and insightful but there are also definitely those who are disgusted or sickened, especially with mortuary photos.

"There's almost a stigma or fear around morgues which I'm hoping to change."

Abandoned places have trended on social media, with thrill seekers discovering creepy places around the world.

One explored filmed a deserted water park that was left to rot for more than 15 years in the middle of the Vietnam jungle.

Another photojournalist captured the remains of an abandoned knock-off Disneyland in China.
