He told voters to choose "fairness, decency, justice and progress" by voting for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

said: "Our democracy is on the ballot".

"The fate of the world is teetering", he continued, "and you, North Carolina, are going to have to make sure that we push it in the right direction".

The swing state is a key battleground in the election, which is now just six days away.

"I hate to put a little pressure on you but the fate of the Republic rests on your shoulders", he told the pro-Clinton rally.

Jittery market experts yesterday predicted a Trump victory would "create too much uncertainty".

Kit Juckes, analyst at Societe Generale, told AFP news service: "Market opinion is coming to the conclusion that a Trump win would create too much uncertainty and is bad for risk sentiment generally".

Shares in the US fell between 0.4 per cent and 0.7 per cent on Wednesday, while major markets in Europe and Asia tumbled one per cent.

Their warnings come as Trump looks closer to winning the presidential race than he has throughout nearly the whole campaign, overtaking his Democratic rival on a key poll.

The ABC/Washington Post survey of voters put the Republican candidate on 46 points -- one ahead of Clinton.

The same poll had Clinton enjoying a commanding 12-point lead just over a week ago.

At a rally in Florida yesterday, Trump focused on his "contract with America, a plan to end government corruption."

Claiming he was on course for victory, and the businessman declared: "We're only left with one person, crooked Hillary Clinton.

"We're going to win. We're going to win"
