A BRIGHT spark risked blowing his entire neighbourhood up by sleeping with a huge 17kg industrial firework under his bed.

The man, in his late 50s, surrendered the explosive haul during a firework amnesty and fire crews have since blown it up in a massive controlled blast.

The man and his neighbours would have lost their lives if the firework detonated in the property.

Warren Pickstone, head of protection at the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority(GMFRS) told : “It would have been devastating. That amount of explosives in one place - it would have blown out the windows and killed anyone inside the property.”

A former professional firework display operator, the man won the category four explosives in a competition and kept them in his flat ever since.

Councillor David Acton, chairman of GMFRS told : “It’s astonishing to think that this man was going to sleep at night with 17kgs of explosives under his bed. The consequences of a fire in his property while this firework was there are simply unthinkable for him, his neighbours and the firefighters, who would have put their lives on the line to rescue him.”

Staff at the two-storey flat complex in Broughton, Salford, were informed that powerful explosives has been kept in the tenant’s bedroom for 12 months.

Only then did the man finally phone GMFRS to remove the industrial firework from under his bed.
