The Met Office's shows winds coming from the Arctic, after a major Sudden Stratospheric Warming reversed their usual direction.

In the map, white patches signifying snow can be seen over northern Scotland.

Cloud will cover all of England and Wales and most of Scotland as the winds bring heavy rain over Wales, the Midlands, the northwest and the south coast.

The Met Office tweeted: "Rain will push eastwards on Wednesday morning.

"Wintry showers will feed into the northwest bringing some sleet and hill snow."

The for today reads: "Bands of rain moving erratically southwards, clearing all but the far southeast by dusk.

"A further band of rain will follow south across southern Scotland and northern England.

"Sunny spells and scattered showers in the west, turning wintry over hills."

As night falls, the Met Office says there will be clear spells and some frost for central and northern areas.

Further south, it will be cloudier with outbreaks of rain or showers, which will be heavy in some places.

There are no weather warnings currently issued, although snow is forecast to hit some parts of Scotland.

Forecasters say that the rain across Britain will be followed by a freezing cold snap in the middle of next week.
