If that continues, costs would more than double by 2025, reaching as much as £2,986 a year.

The Sun has already told how several smaller energy firms have hiked prices and axed the cheapest deals in past weeks.

And we revealed a leaked report from Big Six trade body Energy UK showing that the giants are making profits of as much as £272 on their standard deals.

SWITCH AND CUT COSTS BY £238

THE Sun is giving readers a chance to cut their energy bills by a fifth and save £238 a year.

Our dual-fuel tariff, launched with The Big Deal and supplied by iSupply Energy, is one of the cheapest available.

The deal, fixed for 33 months, will cost just £825 per year on average.

A 12-month £999 deal is available for pre-payment customers — meaning everyone can save.

- The Big Deal receives a commission of £40 for each Sun reader who switches both electricity and gas. The Sun makes no money from the deal.

Astonishingly, some of the Big Six have now said costs are going up so prices will rise.

But SSE, the UK’s second biggest power firm bragged yesterday it will hold standard tariffs for five months.

Guy Anker, from Money Saving Expert, said: “This may seem good news, but anyone on SSE’s standard tariff is almost certainly already overpaying.”
