Inside ‘worst pub in Britain’ as it closes for £850k refurb after being slammed over ‘rude staff and zero atmosphere’

THE 'worst pub in Britain' has closed for an £850k refurbishment after being slammed by customers.
The Wetherspoon boozer in Birmingham has come under fire from patrons for "rude staff" and "zero atmosphere".
Known as The Square Peg, it will now be closed for five weeks with works underway to provide it with an improved customer area and new bar.
The boozer has been repeatedly branded "the worst pub in Birmingham" and has taken a battering from locals on the review site TripAdvisor.
Disappointed punters have left a slew of one-star ratings for the pub.
Out of 702 reviews on the site, which ranks eating establishments by customer satisfaction, it has three and a half stars out of five.

"The staff aren't very friendly and the place is filthy. I wouldn't recommend this place to an enemy," said a fourth.
However, many others were more than happy with the pub.
In a positive review, one commentator wrote: "The Square Peg is a typical Wetherspoons and does amazingly cheap and good breakfast that starts the day in a easy way along with a beer."
Another said: "Visited the square peg for the first time today after a trip to Birmingham with my family to see the commonwealth games.
"I was really impressed with the friendly staff and good food, good value for money and quick service.
"Great little stop off for "dinner and drinks" if your out for the day at Brum. Highly recommended!"
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “ The Square Peg is an extremely popular pub in the city.
“The pub has been an important part of the Birmingham’s social scene since 1995 and the investment highlights Wetherspoon’s commitment to the pub and its customers as well as the city itself.
“The pub is well managed.
“Tripadvisor is based on some individual reviews and is not representative of the views of the tens of thousands of customers who frequent the pub each year.”
The boozer will be closed from Monday, August 7, for the work to take place and patrons have been told that last orders will be 5pm on Sunday, August 6.
Heath Curley, Wetherspoon area manager, said: "The Square Peg is an extremely popular pub.
"This investment highlights our commitment to offering our customers the best possible pub."
The establishment is expected to reopen on Tuesday, September 12, when the works are completed.
