He added: "If you see or think you have seen an Asian Hornet nest don't touch it.

"Take a photo of note its location and then contact the Non Native Species Secretariat by email at [email protected] or the National Bee Unit."

Asian hornets can devour 60 bees a day by biting their heads off - and could soon cause honey shortages in supermarkets.

Expert Roger Simpson told the : "They are a predator on all pollinators.

"So this isn’t simply a niche problem for bee-keepers.

"Yes Asian hornets predate on honey bees, but they predate on all our native pollinators.

"Unchecked they will threaten our food supply and lead to food shortages and increased prices."

Asian hornet nests can be found hanging downwards in sheltered places like sheds, porches, lofts, garages and hedges.

They can be as large as a tennis ball and usually appear in the early spring.
