PARK AND DERIDE

Bizarre moment motorist abandoned white VW with the handbrake OFF in front of parking space for TWO HOURS

Furious motorists tried to move the car in a desperate attempt to clear the car park

A CAR was abandoned IN FRONT of a parking bay while a woman headed off to do two hours of Christmas shopping.

The white Volkswagen blocked cars from parking or pulling out of their space in Mapperley Top, Notts, for two hours on Monday.

Furious motorists tried to move the car - whose handbrake was OFF - in a desperate attempt to clear the congestion in the car park.

Witness Leanne Starbrook said the oblivious driver returned to the car lugging bags of Christmas shopping, but 'didn't even twitch'.

Leanne, who lives in Redhill, Notts,  spotted the woman as she sat in Costa Coffee opposite - having previously tried to shift the car herself.

The 45-year-old said: "My mum was waiting for me in the car park as we meet every Monday for a coffee.

"She had already parked her car but when I arrived no one could get through, the car was literally in the middle of the road.

"Then all the commotion started as people tried to get past - we couldn't understand why someone had parked like that."

Leanne checked the parking ticket on the car and saw it had been parked since 11am - half an hour before Leanne arrived.

It was then a further 90 minutes until a woman returned to the vehicle.

Leanne, founder of registered children's cancer charity Team Rossi Foundation, said: "My mum was parked next to her so it must have rolled back after she parked.

"The handbrake was off and we nudged the car to see if it would move and it did.

"We were just hanging around though because we were worried if we tried to move it anymore, it would roll and cause an accident.

"This one woman was completely blocked in.

"People went into shops and cafes nearby to see if it was anyone's car, but no one came forward."

Leanne was enjoying a coffee in Costa opposite when she saw the middle-aged woman return with 'bags of shopping'.

She added: "It must have been a good couple of hours by the time we saw her come back.

"She had loads of bags, a mixture of food and Christmas shopping, and she just put them in the boot.

"She didn't even twitch.

"She just took her coat off and put it on the back seat then reversed and drove off.

"I think one guy must have pushed the car back a little bit more as it wasn't sticking out as much, but she didn't seem to notice at all. It was hilarious."

Earlier this month a furious row broke out after a driver was accused of parking his Porsche in the middle of a posh London street while he did his shopping.

And a driver was baffled when he got a parking ticket for leaving his broken down car on the back of a tow truck.
