Taking to Twitter he tweeted mockingly: "Bill Clinton stated that I called him after the election. Wrong, he called me (with a very nice congratulations). He doesn't know much ... "He then continued: "Especially how to get people, even with an unlimited budget, out to vote in the vital swing states ( and more). They focused on wrong states."

However not to be outdone, Clinton then tweeted back stating: " "Here's one thing @realDonaldTrump and I can agree on -- I called him after the election."

The social media slap downs started on the back of a column piece which appeared in .

Clinton made his feelings known while browsing in a bookstore, in Katonah, near his home in Chappaqua, in the US.

A newspaper reporter from the publication was in the shop and overheard him telling a punter: "James Comey cost her (Hillary) the election."

Apparently it was Clinton's "unmistakable voice from Hope, Arkansas" which gave him away.

He was then asked what he thought of Trump and he responded: "He doesn't know much.

FBI director James Comey announced yesterday that Clinton would face no criminal charges over her emails

"One thing he does know is how to get angry, white men to vote for him."
The editorial wasn't published online, but  uploaded photos of the print edition where the column appeared.

Clinton was then quizzed on his thoughts regarding U.S. intelligence officials saying Russia deliberately attempted to sway the election in favour of Trump.

It was then Clinton also revealed he spoke to the President-elect  after he won the race for the White House - which was slapped down on social media by Trump

The former president responded: "You would need to have an single-digit IQ not to recognize what was going on."

Clinton then went on to say he felt the letter which was sent to Congress less than two weeks before the US went to the polls, caused terrible damage to his wife's campaign.

He then went on to say American's didn't seem to realise the importance of the fact no evidence had been found to indicate illegal activity.

He also said he felt Comey's letter to congress did irreparable damage to her campaign

Clinton also discussed how he had spoken to Trump on the phone, and was perplexed by the fact he was acting as if they were still good friends, "like it was 15 years ago."

And he mocked the billionaire for suggesting his win was a "landslide."

Clinton told the shoppers who were quizzing him: "Landslide? I got something like 370 electoral votes. That was a landslide."
This was the number during the 1992 election against President George H.W. Bush.

In 1996 against Republican Sen. Bob Dole, he got 379 electoral votes.
