DASHCAM footage from a Tesla shows the amazing moment the car's autopilot function kicks in to predict a car accident before anyone saw it coming.

At the start of the clip, uploaded to Twitter, a group of cars can be seen travelling down the A2 highway in the Netherlands at around 65mph.

Then The Forward Collision Warning on the Tesla beeps, and the emergency braking system suddenly sparks into action.

Microseconds later, the vehicle in front of the Tesla rear ends and SUV, which then flips before quickly coming to a stop.

A Dutch electric car enthusiast, , reported the crash and said: "No one could have predicted the accident but the radar did and acted by emergency braking.

"It prevented what could have been a much bigger accident."

He said no one was injured in the crash even though the SUV flips over and rolls several times.

The car was fitted with Tesla Autopilot, a driver assist technology on Tesla cars.

It includes features such as auto-steer, adaptive cruise control and cameras on all sides of the car and importantly in this car a radar.

Mr Noordsij said the driver of the Tesla confirmed it started braking before he could apply the brakes.

Tesla plan to make all its cars self driving and autonomous within the near future.

The electric car manufacturer introduced its autopilot system last year and is expected to roll out a beefed up version amongst its entire range by 2018.
