Furious mum claims her nine-month-old baby is ‘lucky to be alive’ after tot FELL out of ‘death trap’ Aldi trolley onto supermarket floor

New mum Claire O'Callaghan, from Ashy-de-la-Zouch, Leics, claims her baby, Emmet, fell out of the trolley seat while she was shopping in Aldi earlier this month

A FURIOUS mum has slammed the child seats in Aldi's trolleys after she claims it is a "miracle" her son has no injuries after falling to the floor.

Claire O'Callaghan was in the Ashby-de-la-Zouch store in Leicestershire just before Christmas when her nine-month-old baby fell from the trolley.

It comes weeks after another mum set up an online petition demanding Aldi change the design of the trolley child seats.

Claire said: "I don't want to let it lie, I know it's the parent's responsibility to look after their child but still, these trolleys are potential death traps.

"I imagined things in this country to be safe so funnily enough, I didn't think much of the trolley when I put him in it.

"It's a miracle he's got no injuries, he's perfectly fine.

"Both of us [her and her mother] were with the trolley the whole time. My mum passed me some butter and I literally just turned to get it.

"As I turned around he had launched himself out of the trolley and while I managed to break his fall in an attempt to catch him, he hit the floor.

"Even though he looked fine, we went to the doctors to check him out but luckily there was nothing wrong with him.

"My mum spoke to someone who was working there and they told them they don't have lap straps due to the risk of strangulation, which I think is absolute rubbish.

"They said they don't need to fit them as they already meet EU regulation for the safety of their trolleys.

"The store people put it in the accident book and they were really lovely about it.

"But when I called the customer services people they said the trolleys are fine as they conform to regulations.

"All the other supermarkets seem to have them so what will it take for Aldi to follow suit, a child dying or getting brain damage?"

Hairdresser Claire added: "I'd do anything that's in my son's best interest so I went to see if there had been any similar reports or complaints before.

"I then searched it online and saw I wasn't alone.

"If they can't make their trolleys safe, they shouldn't have the option to put your child on them at all."

Jodie Shawcross from Ashton-Under-Lyne, Manchester, created an online petition for Aldi to put straps on their trolleys after her toddler stood up in one.

An Aldi spokesperson said: "We are very sorry to hear about this incident.

"We provide customers with a range of infant trolleys in all of our stores, which comply with all relevant safety standards."

Aldi has been contacted for further comment.
