SHOW ME THE WAY TO... SAN ESCOBAR?

Polish official ridiculed across the internet after being caught inventing a fake COUNTRY

THE FOREIGN Minister of Poland made up a country called San Escobar — possibly after cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar — when trying to think of states that have lent support to a political cause.

Witold Waszczykowski made the gaffe as he listed countries who have allegedly backed Poland's campaign to win a seat on the UN Security Council.

Speaking in New York, Mr Waszczykowski said he had met ministers from “Belize and San Escobar”.

Pablo Escobar, the notorious Colombian drug lord shot dead by police in 1993, is the lead character in the hit Netflix series Narcos.

Poland’s foreign ministry told he may have gotten lost in translation.

Social media has gone into meltdown as users mocked the embarrassing slip-up.

Twitter users created mock flags and profiles showcasing so-called “San Escobar”, while the fake name became a trending topic in Poland.

A Twitter account was even created to represent the “People’s Democratic Republic of San Escobar”, complete with flags, maps and photographs of the fictional country.

It jokingly said Britain should be thrown out of the EU immediately after the BBC reported on the "fake" country.

A picture was also posted showing a San Escobaran banknote with a picture of former Polish prime minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

Poland is campaigning for the Security Council position as tensions grow over the threat of Russian encroachment on its borders.
