Actor Tom Conti leads crusade to halt a new Tesco – despite it being a mile away from his £17.5m home

ACTOR Tom Conti is waging war on Tesco to halt a new store — despite it being a mile away from the luvvie’s £17.5million home.
The Shirley Valentine star, 75, is leading a crusade to stop the supermarket giant converting a Budgens.
Yesterday, as campaign posters featuring his mug began being plastered around exclusive Belsize Park in North London, he said: “It is horrifying news.”
The actor, who lives in neighbouring Hampstead, added: “The fear is Tesco will reduce the quality of the food and raise the prices.
“Budgens in Belsize Park is known for its high quality and great range of food.”
Conti, a veteran of film, TV and the stage, won a previous battle to stop a Tesco opening in 2015.
He said of the new store bid: “It’s terrible payback after our campaign.”
The posters emblazoned with his photo bear the slogan: “We don’t want. We don’t need.”
Tesco is poised to take over the Budgens chain by buying the wholesaler that owns it.
Conti’s whinge comes days after he and fellow celebs angrily launched another campaign — over plans to axe weekly rubbish collections from private homes.
Labour-run Camden council wants to make them fortnightly.
But council homes will still have bins emptied weekly, leaving posh residents livid. Jonathan Ross, Boy George, Kate Moss and David Walliams are also objecting to the shake-up.
