The newspaper claims a top judge has made those involved in the case anonymous by using initials on court documents instead of their names and that it is in legal proceedings with the star.

The extreme order stops members of the press from disclosing any information which could lead to the identity of the celebrity involved, including their sex, the reason they are famous and information relating to the story.

The measure - officially called an anonymised privacy injunction - bans publication across England and Wales but can't stop media organisations from the rest of the world printing details about the case.

The latest injunction preventing the press from reporting on celebrities has led to the so called "super injunction" making a comeback.

It has been used in the past by the famous and elite to keep their extra-marital affairs covered up.

In 2003 Liverpool football stars Steve McManaman and Robbie Fowler unsuccessfully tried to obtain an injunction to stop claims coming out that they'd had a threesome with a girl.

In 2010 former England captain John Terry applied for an injunction against the Mail on Sunday which claimed he had had an affair with French model Vanessa Perroncel, the former partner of fellow England defender Wayne Bridge, and she had had an abortion within months of the affair starting.

It was thrown out by a judge four days later who said he was more concerned about his sponsorship deals than protecting his "private and family life".

Later the same year former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson obtained an injunction gagging ex-wife Alex Hall from claiming they had an affair after he married his second wife Francie. However he later unmasked himself saying "injunctions are pointless".

At the time the father of three could be described only as “a married TV star”.

In recent years there have also been a number of other celebs who have successfully kept their affairs out of the headlines, including the case of "PJS".
