Locals feared they'd heard gunfire as multiple loud bangs - believed to be a police tactical device - were captured on a Ring doorbell after armed cops swarmed the street at 8.25am.

Police confirmed that a 78-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and 36-year-old man had been arrested.

More than 20 emergency services vehicles swarmed the site, according to locals.

And one resident caught the terrifying moment on their Ring doorbell camera.

In the footage, an officer can be seen walking through a garden before five bangs were heard.

A few seconds later, a further six were recorded.

A section of Fernieside Crescent remains closed this afternoon as detectives and forensic officers carried out their investigation.

Forensic officers could be seen in white suits going in and out of a block house on the street.

Locals watched on some visibly shaken and shocked by what had happened.

Local councilor Phil Goddart visited the scene to support the community.

He said: “Obviously this is a tragedy.

“Violent crime in the area is unusual.

“I would urge locals to stay calm. The police have dealt with this efficiently in the circumstances.

“My thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.”

Brian Jackson, 39, who lives nearby, said: “I still can’t believe something like this has happened.

“It seems surreal. I didn’t know the old woman but it’s sad, just really sad.”

One local told how they heard screams around 8am.

The resident, who declined to be named, said: “I heard screams not long after I got up.

“It seemed unusual but I thought nothing more about it.

"A while later I heard more sirens and saw armed cops on the street.

“I was told to stay inside and I could hear them shouting at someone.

“Then there was several loud bangs, a dozen maybe, all within a couple of minutes."

Another resident said: “I could tell by the amount of police that it was serious.

“But it’s tragic to learn that an older lady has lost her life.

“This sort of thing is obviously really unsettling when you live in the same area.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a 78-year-old woman in Edinburgh on Tuesday, 21 May, 2024.

"Around 8.25am, police were called to a disturbance within a house in Fernieside Crescent. Police and Ambulance attended and a 78-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death and enquiries continue.

"This was an isolated incident and officers remain in the area to provide public reassurance and anyone with concerns should speak to officers.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
