Did Morrisons predict the courgette crisis? Vans with amusing slogan have been on the streets for years

The vans have been on the streets for three years since the launch of Morrisons delivery service

A SLOGAN on the side of Morrisons' delivery vans claiming no courgettes are kept in their vans overnight has amused shoppers.

Supplies of courgettes have been running low in supermarkets around the UK after bad weather in Spain decimated crops.

The southern eastern region of Murcia produces 80 per cent of the vegetables sold in the UK during the winter.

Experts have said that shortages of courgettes could continue until June, while the availability of tomatoes, peppers, broccoli and lettuce leaves may be tight until at least May.

Supermarkets have been working with suppliers to keep vegetables on the shelves but many have run out entirely.

Some have even imposed restrictions on the number of items that shoppers can buy.

But the Morrisons vans - which imply that courgettes are precious cargo - were actually launched in January 2014 when the supermarket started its grocery delivery service.

They were designed as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the yellow Reliant Regal van made famous by Only Fools and Horses - except they have four wheels instead of three.

The grocer then took inspiration from white-van slogans, with signage including “No courgettes kept in this van overnight”, “Honk if you like rhubarb” and “My other van is a tractor”.

Last month, a paramedic mistook a Morrisons delivery van for an ambulance.

Other people have also been fooled by the yellow delivery vans, which are around the same size and have similar colours to an NHS ambulance.
